When I woke up suddenly last night, I suddenly became aware that I had noticed over the past few months a recurring pattern of negativity. This pattern had made its way into various situations and through various people and displayed similar destructive characteristics. Surely, this wasn’t just coincidental but had intentionally come from somewhere? This, I believe was the work of the demonic powers in my home, work and everyday existence. Ever felt under spiritual attack ? This blog is trying to help you combat evil, when things are getting intense, painful and bitter in your life.
This topic is barely touched upon in Christian circles and I am hoping to demystify nonsense around the subject! Jesus talks about demons and angels many times in the Bible, (notably the book of Daniel and Revelation) . I feel we ought to attempt to sought a deeper understand of the spiritual realm through the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.
In order for us to understand how evil spirits manifest themselves, we need to get into their shoes. The best fighter needs to learn the ways of their opponent in order to defeat them successfully. They manifest in all sorts of ways through the common sinful nature such as addictions.‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms’ ( Ephesians 6:12).
Let’s start from the beginning (of what we know) to get an overview of the situation. Satan was once an angel of the highest order , he was anointed as guardian cherub in the garden of Eden . I mean, he had everything, with outstanding beauty and tremendous skill . Until, one day, he decided it wasn’t enough and he wanted more, he desired to become like God .
‘In the pride of your heart
you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne of a god
in the heart of the seas.”
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
though you think you are as wise as a god‘.
At this point, his inward and outward beauty transformed into ugliness. His heart turned to stone and his ways became ungodly. ‘Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendour. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings (Ezekiel 28:11). To think that he was once flawless, utter perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty (Ezekiel 28 :12). He changed into something completely unrecognisable when he desired more than he was given .This can be hard to even imagine, given that he had every precious stone adorning him and was anointed by God himself. He was just like ‘us’ (humans), always desiring for more and unsatisfied with their lot (at times!).
So, why am I giving you this backdrop? To enable you to understand that evil desires can become born in anyone (addiction, manipulation, power, abuse, anger, corruption, desires of the flesh ,envy, greed etc) at any time, if you are not self -aware of the evil schemes that are ever –present, and you could get caught out ; ‘Keep sober and alert, because your enemy the devil is on the prowl like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour’ (Matt 4:1). Think of the fallen angel, he was ‘sealed with perfection’, yet managed to fall into sin (get your head around that !!) . We also, know that Jesus (who was perfect) also suffered with temptation especially in the Garden of Gethsemane . Jesus guarded himself with prayer, and spiritually battled with the devil for forty days and nights so that he would be strong enough to push away the devils schemes. Unbelievable! we are not Jesus and neither are we born of perfection, so therefore we must be serious about fasting in order to win the victory over the evil one. So when do we have time to fast? I hear you say ! But God calls us to do such things if we are going to gain a strategy against the devil (and win).
I don’t know if you have ever thought that you were in the presence of a godly leader who seemed to convey traits of perfection? (Maybe you did!) , but then you found out they weren’t really the person they said they were, by the actions they conveyed and the maltreatment of the people they led. You caught them off guard and found out they were a fraud . Your perception of them completely obliterated in an instant. This is exactly the way that Satan masquerades himself. You need to be shrewd and very aware of these wolves who act with wrong intentions and portray themselves as ‘angels’ when they are INDEED counterfeit . You can do this is a few ways;
Learning to lean on the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you , praying that God guards your heart and learning the pattern and habitual ways of destruction. I must admit, sometimes it has taken me several years and experience to actually see what really happened to me in those situations. Perhaps you have a more mature Christian friend you can rely on, who will intercede on your behalf. They may well have pictures and prophetic insights for you. I have found journalling to be very helpful and God can make me see through words and reflection. Although, I now know that when I am confused about a situation that doesn’t seem quite right, that I need the Holy Spirit to clarify the situation . This doesn’t mean the situation will change right away, but it does mean you have been given insight into what is happening behind the scenes. Listen to your gut feeling too, it doesn’t normally lie to you. But, ultimately, ask God to reveal his wisdom in that situation. ‘And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness’ (2 Cor 11:14). I can’t believe how subtle the devil is !
Remember that story in the New Testament about the demons going into the pigs? (Matthew 8:28-34). In Matthew’s gospel it speaks about two demon possessed men who were so violent no one could pass them. They then begged Jesus to send them into a herd of pigs . They did and the pigs jumped off the cliff into the sea. Notice, they needed to ask permission from Jesus before they could be released into another body. If your life has been sealed by Jesus, you will be protected and blessed and having nothing to fear. If you are full of the Holy Spirit, there will be no room for the evil to manifest and make his home within you. We can therefore derive from this passage that evil is roaming freely from one body to another looking for a human to devour. We can all be susceptible to spiritual attacks and need to battle in prayer through those hard times. Jesus, for example was on his knees and shedding drops of blood in sweat prior to his death on the cross. Imagine the fear, the pain and the utter isolation that Jesus felt in that moment when his nearest and dearest disciples were sleeping during his agonising wait . We know, that evil will flee when we pray in Jesus’ authoritative name.
Matt 12:38 states how a evil spirit behaves : ‘Then an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.
The passage above would seem to imply that an evil spirit keeps roaming around until he has found a human being as a ‘host’ to do his evil actions and is persistent on returning if the host is open and in a worse state. This would then imply that we need, to daily be filled with the Holy Spirit as our protector. Each of us can be tempted by evil ( as Jesus was, but did not commit any offence), if we choose to, THROUGH a moment of weakness. Or even if we are trying to overcome temptation by our own strength without the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, our advocate is vital then for us to overcome our own human vulnerabilities.
Ask the Holy Spirit this week to reveal to you, what deception you have experienced in your life, and where the evil is coming from, in order for you to protect yourself and stamp out the evil schemes of the devil. Remember you are a son and daughter of God and can’t be harmed by the lies or devices of the enemy .
